The Physics Department of Srikrishna College was started as a General Course department in 1995. Later, from 2008 B.Sc. Honours in Physics was introduced. Since 2018, the three-year Honours and General course have been substituted by a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Our recent intake capacity is 46 for B. Sc. Honours and 149 for B.Sc. General Course. Every year the selection and admission of the students are made strictly according to merit. The rate of success of our students is as high as ninety percent. A good number of honours students come out with excellent results every year and got admission to reputed universities for higher studies. Many of our students have qualified in JAM, NET, SET, and other competitive examinations.
Currently, the department has three full-time Assistant Professors and six State Aided College Teachers. The department is equipped with modern up-to-date practical instruments, which are arranged course-wise in four laboratory rooms. Recently, two new laboratory rooms are set up with new equipment for coming sessions. Apart from laboratory rooms, the department has five separate classrooms for honours and general students. A common smart classroom and ICT are available to all departments of the College. The Physics department is also equipped with a small computer laboratory with three computers and internet services. The facility of computer programming (Python, Scilab, Numpy, Scipy) classes for the B.Sc. Honours students are also available. The final year Honours students have the facility to do their project work under the guidance of the Assistant Professors.
During the lockdown period in the COVID-19 pandemic, the department has conducted both theoretical and practical classes in online mode. All the faculty members have tried their best to provide a good learning opportunity to the students during the critical period of time. As the use of ICT is becoming one of the most essential gears for teaching, the department has a goal to replace one of the classrooms with a new smart classroom. Under the scheme of the Faculty Exchange Program, this department has arranged online classes by the guest faculty members of other colleges. The department also has an aim to conduct such classes in the future through both online and offline modes.
The department has a future prospect of developing facilities for research works. All the full-time faculty members are engaged in research works and have publications in esteemed International Journals. Recently, one of our full-time faculty members Dr. Sujay Pal received a Start-up Grant from SERB and an R&D grant from WBDSTBT for conducting his research work in collaboration with other eminent research institutes.
The department arranges an Orientation program and a Fresher welcome every year for the first-year students. The department also publishes its own wall magazine every year, in which both students and teachers can share their views on different fields of Physics. Seminars, lectures, webinars by eminent faculty members of different universities, institutes, and colleges are frequently arranged in the department to orient young minds towards taking up research in science as a career.
